So a couple of weeks these ridiculously cute organizer boxes kept popping all over my Instagram feed. People keeping talking about how much they could hold and ( with a teacher discount ) how they cheap they were. With storage and lack of space being a daily struggle in the life of an SLP, and the fact that I have no self control when it comes to pretty organizing materials, I knew I must find a use for this organization beauty. Just around the same time as the organizer kept popping up so did lots of different sensory bin posts. Organization, sensory bin, organization, sensory bin….light bulb!
I don’t have a lot of storage space so having different containers for each sensory bin wasn’t going to work for me. Also, this year I am doing more push-in services and other interventions around my building so carrying a big box materials was a bit cumbersome. These mini sensory bins are perfect for me to take to classrooms along with all the other items I need like a clipboard, iPad, etc. Bonus, I can bring more than one box with me!
I filled the different boxes with materials to go with their different themes.
If you are looking for little objects to fill in these containers have no fear. You can find tonsat your local craft stores! I found all of these at Michaels. Now the small farm animals fit the containers perfectly but they were almost as much as one of the TOOB sets, thank goodness I had a coupon. Since the containers are small I clearly cannot put all of the TOOB items in there at once, but that means I can trade some out and keep the box ‘new’ for my kids. The pieces I am not using get stored in the ‘non sensory bin’ containers. This means I basically have a sensory bin organizer with the sensory boxes and materials all in one spot! Who doesn’t like everything in one spot?
Item Tip: Look where they have items for Fairy Gardens if you are looking for base fillers or specific items! Everything is tiny and there are lots of choices.
So far I boxes I have are Farm, Pets, Ocean Animals, Spring, St. Patrick’s Day, and Bugs. I am always on the look out for more ideas, so please, comment with your favorite themes and what you have in them.

This is a fabulous idea!! I like the idea of sensory bins but they take up so much space! Love the mini-bins!

Hi Kathy, Sensory bins are a wonderfully flexible tool. Students can dig through the material and find objects, cards, whatever you put in. Then they an use those items to target their goals. So if a child who is working on following directions digs through a farm themed bin and finds a cat and shovel, you can give them a direction involving those items. Sensory bins can also help to increase vocabulary using tangible items. Some SLPs even bury cards from other activities in them. I hope that helps!

Love this idea! I am a home health therapist and it’s hard to carry my bulky box around! I try to have a sensory bin for every theme! Space becomes s factor in my home office!

Can you give more examples of what you put in the sensory boxes?

Sure thing! In my Farm Animals box I have brown pom poms of two different sizes, smooth, flat black stones that are actually vase filler, small farm animal characters ( about 8 ) and gold sparkle pom poms that are ‘haystacks’.

In addition to the boxes you mentioned, I made one for Christmas/winter using cotton balls, mini trees, penguins, reindeer, igloos, etc. lots of mini ornaments available
I also have sports, Hobby Lobby has mini sport equipment ornaments
Valentines Day (lots of different size and color hearts, great for same/different and comparing sizes using superlatives)Reply
