Learn how to make your own Homemade Coconut Butter in 10 minutes! Just 1 ingredient! Use for cakes, cupcakes, toast, muffins, fudge. So easy and so delicious!
Seriously, all you need is 10 mins to have homemade, creamy coconut butter. Well, that and a bag of this dried shredded unsweetened coconut. Make sure to not buy reduced fat shredded coconut!! It won’t work. I use coconut butter in many recipes on my blog. It is so easy and fast to make and tastes delicious!
You don’t technically need to use Bob’s Red Mill. I just really like this brand because it is very fresh and finely ground and it worked absolutely perfectly.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE COCONUT BUTTER
Add 3 cups of unsweetened shredded coconut to a food processor and process for about 10 minutes, that’s it! You will definitely need a good qualityfood processor. A food processor works much better than a Vitamix or blender!
If your climate is cooler, you may need to let it run twice as long. Scrape the sides as necessary. It will seem as though nothing is happening the first 2 minutes, but let it keep going. It will start to thicken as a paste, keep going, and before you know it, it will turn into silky smooth coconut butter. Please note that depending on the size of your food processor, it may require more or less coconut to process properly and the time may take longer. It should literally be a runny consistency before you stop.
Transfer to a glass container to store.
HOW TO STORE COCONUT BUTTER
Keep the coconut butter stored at room temperature in the pantry. It will keep for months. It will become very hard during storage. To use again, you will need to warm it first, so that it becomes a liquid again.
To do this, heat the glass container for 15-30 seconds just until it is soft enough to stir it around. Stir until it becomes soft and chunky. If needed, heat another 5-10 seconds and stir until it is completely liquid and melted before using in a recipe. As you continue to stir, the warmth helps it to turn into liquid. Be very careful about overheating coconut, or it will burn and be ruined.

Hi Brandi. I want to make the coconut butter but what quantity of butter i.e. how many cups or tablespoons, do you end up with using 3 cups coconut? TIA
What is the shelf life of coconut butter? Coconut butter is naturally stable and lasts for about 1 year to 15 months depending on the brand and if it contains preservatives or not. However, the consistency of coconut butter will vary according to the temperature while in storage.
It has a low smoking point, so you shouldn't use it for frying or sautéing ingredients. It can replace butter when baking, though. This ingredient is a great substitute for any type of fat when making baked goods. It's most commonly used as a substitute for nut butter.
Creamed coconut is also made from ground dehydrated coconut flesh, and then compressed into a block. It is similar in form to coconut butter but is very dense and is most commonly mixed with water to make coconut milk or added to soups or stews.
What does coconut butter taste like? Coconut butter tastes like straight coconut. It's lightly sweet and nutty, and I find it to be very pleasant! But, if you're not a coconut fan, this recipe probably isn't for you.
Coconut butter burns easily and isn't your best bet for stovetop cooking over anything higher than very low heat for a brief time. It's perfect for making fudge and candies and may be substituted for butter or oil. It will add a strong, sweet, coconut flavor to your recipes.
How do you store coconut butter? Store homemade coconut butter in a sealed container or glass jar. There is no need to refrigerate it, and the coconut butter will last for at least a few months in the pantry… that is if you don't eat it all first!
It is known for lowering cholesterol levels and supporting weight loss. Consuming food that contains lauric acid can increase the HDL (good) cholesterol of the body. It will also reduce the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Therefore, it can also support heart health.

Coconut butter, as you may have guessed, is excellent for skin care. Coconut oil contains antioxidants, as well as Lauric acid, Myristic acid, Palmitic acid, Monounsaturated fats, Polyunsaturated fats, Plant sterols, and Medium-chain triglycerides.
Think of coconut oil and coconut butter like peanut oil and peanut butter — two distinct products used for very different purposes. Coconut oil is simply the oil that's been extracted from the coconut meat, while coconut butter is made from coconut flesh that's been ground into a spreadable paste.
Once opened, it's best consumed within 3-6 months. However, a cooler environment can slightly extend this timeframe. If you choose to freeze coconut butter, it can last even longer, for up to 3 years without losing quality.
Coconut butter can be easily converted into coconut cream by mixing 1 part coconut butter with 1 part water (1/2 c coconut butter + 1/2 c water), or converted into coconut milk by mixing 1 part coconut butter with 5 parts water (3 tbsp coconut butter + 1 c water).
Alternatively, if placing on hot food, scoop out and it should melt quite easily on the food. I love putting coconut butter on things like baked sweet potatoes, bananas, muffins, waffles, pancakes, smoothies,ice cream, and oats, and especially just eating it straight from the jar!
There are various benefits to using coconut butter on the skin. Since coconut butter is high in fatty acids, it can keep the skin moisturized, reducing dry skin and wrinkles as a result. Coconut butter also contains lauric acid, which is a fatty acid that's known to have antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Coconut oil can replace butter in baking at a 1:1 ratio, though it may slightly change the flavor, with some types of coconut oil affecting taste more than others. Unrefined coconut oil tends to taste more like coconut than refined varieties. It works great for recipes that require tropical or rich chocolate flavors.
Coconut Butter is great for moisturising and protecting the skin. It promotes skin elasticity and fights free radical damage to help maintain a more youthful complexion.
