They’re dairy free pancakes too! Pancakes are by far one of the most convenient foods for baby led weaning. They are easy to make, they travel well, and they freeze well. But for those of us eating a vegan diet or babies with food allergies, it can be more difficult to find recipes that work. Most egg free pancakes or dairy free pancakes are made with mashed bananas. Which is totally yummy too, however sometimes we want less banana flavour. This recipe delivers allergy friendly pancakes with a traditional pancake flavour.
A More Neutral Baby-Led Weaning Pancake
Sometimes I like a good solid base recipe that I can dress up with a variety of different toppings. That is often easier said than done when we make dairy free pancakes or egg free pancakes. This recipe however, uses mostly traditional healthy pancake ingredients that have a more neutral flavour. This makes them perfect for savoury pancake toppings like avocado and goat cheese.
Chia Seeds and Egg Free Pancakes
The secret ingredient here is chia seeds. Chi seeds are truly magical when it comes to egg free pancakes and any other egg free baking for that matter. When chia seeds are mixed into warm water for a few minutes, their texture changes. This texture mimics the texture and binding properties of a traditional egg. Even more exciting, chia seeds are packed with nutrition our growing babies need like omega-3, fibre, and protein.
Dairy Free Pancake Options
My little one had a sensitivity to milk at a younger age, so we switched to milk alternatives early on. It hasn’t always been so easy to find dairy free alternatives. Today, however, most markets carry a huge variety of plant-based milk alternatives. Your options include almond milk, cashew milk, soy milk, and even banana milk! I use almond milk in the recipe but you can absolutely change it out for another variety of milk and still have the same result.
Dressing Up Your Pancake
Toppings are like fashion for your pancake. Soooo many different options! Below I gave a few fun suggestions including dairy free pancake topping options. I love to make smooth dairy-free chocolate spread out of cocoa and bananas. You can top these however you’d like, but just remember, if you want to freeze them, save the toppings for after they thaw 😉
