How to Make Mac and Cheese in a Slow Cooker

Updated: Mikey taped a Cooking Showfor this dish.

Aunt Lou here.

I don’t know who was more excited about this recipe, me or the kids. They saw me taking photos of it in the crock pot, then plating it up and taking more photos. When I told them that they were going to have it for lunch, Ryder was literally jumping up and down with excitement! Iyla kept saying, “Yummy yummy!” over and over again. And truth be told, mommy couldn’t wait to dig in either!

I changed things up a bit on this recipe because I wanted it super creamy. My wish was fulfilled! And I added in the sprinkling of the Italian bread crumbs to see what it was like. The kids and I alike loved it with the additional flavor. If Italian bread crumbs are not up your alley, then feel free to leave them out.

Excellent! Made this Sunday and it tasted just like my MIL’s recipe. I always hated making it, though, because you had to stand over the stove and stir it non-stop so it didn’t burn. Very yummy, easy and no mess to clean up. Definitely a keeper!

Can this be made using uncooked rotini & increase the cooking time?

      Hi Jennifer!

I haven’t tried it with uncooked rotini. The liquid amounts, as well as the time, would need to be tweaked in order for the pasta to cook. Without testing it, I don’t want to make recommendations as to what those tweaks would be. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes! Enjoy!

      Hi Graeme!

It is half milk half light cream. I’ve also heard it called half cream. If you don’t have it available in Australia, you can google how to make substitutes. I promise you it will be worth the effort with how yummy this dish tastes! Enjoy!

FAQs

How do you keep pasta from getting mushy in a slow cooker? ›

It's that simple! Microwave 1 pound of pasta with 1 tablespoon of oil in a bowl at 50 percent power, stirring occasionally, until your pasta begins to look toasted and blistered, 5 to 8 minutes. Toasting allows the pasta proteins to set, which prevents excessive swelling. Which prevents mushy slow cooked pasta goop.

How long does it take pasta to cook in a crock pot? ›

Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1 to 2 hours. Check at the 3 (on low) or 1 (on high) hour mark to ensure the pasta does not over cook. To check for doneness, use a fork to pull a “test” noodle from the center of the slow cooker. Once it is tender, the pasta is done.

Why did my noodles turn to mush in the crockpot? ›

Why did my noodles turn to mush in the crockpot? One of the most common reasons for mushy noodles is overcooking. Pasta, including noodles, has a relatively short cooking time compared to other ingredients typically prepared in a crockpot.

Can I leave pasta in the slow cooker all day? ›

You can use slow cookers to make pasta as long as you don't mix the pasta in with the sauce and leave it sitting in the slow cooker for an extended period of time. Doing so will result in pasta that is mushy, soggy and unappetizing. For best results, keep the pasta separate until serving.

Does pasta get softer the longer you cook it? ›

Start with the cooking time listed on the package, taste test, and go from there. If you like a softer pasta, you may want to add two more minutes.

Does cooking pasta longer make it softer or harder? ›

Pasta that is soft and mushy is usually overcooked, while if it's crunchy and hard, this is a good indication that you haven't cooked it for long enough. Pasta cooked perfectly tends to be tender on the inside and a bit firm on the outside.

Does pasta need to be covered in liquid in slow cooker? ›

The secret to mac and cheese in the slow cooker is plenty of liquid, but not too much! If you're planning to cook pasta low and slow, make sure there's just enough liquid — milk, broth, or water — for the pasta to soak up. Too little liquid and the pasta will be dry and chewy instead of tender.

Can you put uncooked pasta in sauce? ›

By skipping the separate boiling of the pasta and instead adding the dried noodles straight to the sauce, you can make a weeknight-friendly meal in just one pot. Bonus: It makes the pasta more flavorful, too.

Is 4 hours in a Crock-Pot enough? ›

If a dish usually takes: 15-30 mins, cook it for 1-2 hours on High or 4-6 hours on Low. 30 mins – 1 hour, cook it for 2-3 hours on High or 5-7 hours on Low. 1-2 hours, cook it for 3-4 hours on High or 6-8 hours on Low.

What cannot be cooked in a slow cooker? ›

What vegetables should not be added to a slow cooker? ›

Tender vegetables

Vegetables such as peas, asparagus and peppers can become a flavorless, mushy mess in a slow cooker. Stick to heartier root vegetables like potatoes, onions, leeks and yams, or wait to add the tender vegetables until the last 30 minutes or so of cooking time.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Is it safe to leave a crockpot on overnight? ›

Is it safe to leave a slow cooker on for 12 hours? Yes, you can use your slow cooker for longer than eight hours, as long as you keep an eye on it. Many slow cookers do have an automatic shutoff after 24 hours.

Can I leave crockpot on warm overnight? ›

Don't leave it on 'warm' all day

Most appliances will automatically shut off after 20 or so hours on this setting, but you shouldn't leave food in a slow cooker for an extended length of time. The general rule of thumb is that 2-4 hours is the maximum length of time you can leave food in a slow cooker on warm.

How to cook dry pasta in slow cooker? ›

Cooking pasta in a slow cooker is not recommended because it can become mushy. If you do choose to cook pasta in a slow cooker, use a short, small pasta shape and add at least 6 cups of liquid for every 1 pound of pasta. Cook on high for about 3 hours, stirring occasionally.

How do you make pasta not mushy? ›

What can I do to avoid this without it becoming mushy (which happens if I keep it in the water)? Make sure the ratio of water to pasta is enough. You can have too little water but you really can't have too much. Make sure the water is really boiling before adding the pasta.

How do you reverse mushy pasta? ›

Heat the olive oil in a skillet and add your overcooked pasta. Gently sauté over medium heat for a few minutes until the pasta's texture has firmed up. The whole process takes less than 10 minutes and you'll know it is done when the edges of the pasta have started to crisp and light browning has begun.
